The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear Michael Nance's request for a less painful method of execution. In his request, Michael Nance points out that his execution by lethal injection may cause him extreme pain. For this reason, he asks to be killed by a firing squad.
Because of his drug addiction at the time, he says, lethal injection would cause him to fear that, in the worst case, even his veins could burst.

The American Civil Liberties Union, American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia und das Rutherford Institute (a non-profit organization for civil rights) support Michael's request.

Currently, lethal injection is the only method of execution authorized in the state of Georgia.

As early as 2020, Michael Nance asked for an alternative method of execution, citing his medical condition. Michael suffers from damaged veins, which could allow the lethal toxin to penetrate the adjacent tissue if injected, this tissue would effectively "burn". Also, the sedative effect of the injectable could be diminishing in its effectiveness because Michael Nance has been taking strong medications for back pain in recent years. Both could cause Michael Nance to suffer terrible pain during his execution.

Such a painful execution would violate the U.S. Eighth Amendment, which prohibits "cruel and unusual punishment."

Regardless of how the U.S. Supreme Court will decide in the end, it must be noted here that in the U.S. again and again similar applications were rejected and then the applicants were executed... The constitution of the USA does not seem to be worth the paper on which it stands!

As Michael said recently, after learning from his attorney that the U.S. Supreme Court is about to hear his petition, "At least it adds another 2 years or so of life..."

It's a macabre, legal "game" in which, no matter the outcome, there is definitely a loser: Michael Nance - who is to be murdered in the end, by whatever method...

- Michael has taken responsibility for his crime.
- He does not deny having made serious mistakes in his life.
- He has spent a large part of his life on death row.

It would be a crime to execute him now!

Michael deserves a second chance!
